What is the International Driving Document?
A plain explanation of what we produce, what it is for, and its limits.
It is a translation, nothing more
We take the licence you already hold and render its details into a standardised multi-language booklet, alongside a digital copy. The point is to let someone who cannot read your licence — a rental agent, a traffic officer — understand what it says.
What it is not
It is not a government-issued International Driving Permit. It is not issued under the Geneva or Vienna Conventions. It does not extend, replace or upgrade your licence, and it grants no right to drive anywhere. If your destination requires a genuine IDP, you need to get one from the authorised issuer in the country that issued your licence.
When it is genuinely useful
- Your licence is in a script that is not widely read at your destination
- You want a backup copy of your licence details while travelling
- A rental company accepts a translation and you would rather not be delayed
When you should not buy it
- Your destination requires a government IDP or a local permit
- Your licence has expired or is provisional or suspended
- You are travelling to a country that does not recognise translations at all
